"It’s friendly and inclusive, with boys taking part and no exams.  I’m really impressed by how much my son has learned in just a few weeks."

Totsdance: Independance

Totsdance: Independance is a bridge class between Totsdance and Kidsdance which runs in Twickenham on Saturday mornings (9.30 - 10am). At Totsdance the children are supported by their parent or carer, while for Kidsdance: Prime Movers (for 3.5 to 5 year olds) they stay without their carer.  For some children this is a big hurdle to overcome, so Independance takes it gradually.

What happens in the class?

Independance uses a different theme each week, following the same programme as Totsdance.  It isn't exactly the same as the Totsdance classes however, as we adapt to the abilities of the group, who are mostly slightly older.

Each class begins with a fun dance warm-up, based on exercises used in contemporary dance training. The children look in the Story Box to find objects relevant to the theme of the week and the rest of the class includes theme-based dance routines, travelling sequences, exploring movement through play equipment - ribbons, hoops, parachute and tunnels - partner work and a cool-down.

The children gradually develop the skills they will need for Prime Movers, such as finding a balance, being still, responding to a signal, listening, copying, working with a partner - many of these are skills they will also need at school!

How young can my child start?

Independance is for children aged 2 to 4. Children younger than 2 are rarely ready to stay without a carer.  Independance is a very popular class, so you are advised to put your child's name on the waiting list if they are not quite old enough to join yet.  Please contact us for details.

Are parents expected to stay?

One parent or carer is welcome to stay to begin with, but we encourage the children gradually to take part by themselves, which takes longer for different children.  Parents usually find us because their child loves to dance - we want them to carry on enjoying it!  If your child is not ready to stay on their own, we ask you to stay with them for a few weeks to help them get the most out of their dance class.  Some parents join in everything, others sit at the side and watch, or leave when their child is ready.

If I leave my child, who will look after them?

Independance has one teacher and at least one adult assistant.  Our staff are CRB checked and insured.  We limit our class sizes, so we can give each child individual attention. Usually, your child won't have time to miss you!  Before you leave, we ask for your up to date emergency contact numbers and any relevant information about your child - in an emergency we would call you.
