IMG_0873250Suggestions for Structuring your Kidsdance Party

Successful parties are well planned and structured. Our dance workshops last 45 minutes (2-3s) one hour (for 4-7s), one and a quarter hours (for 8-12s) - most children can't concentrate on one activity for longer than that. We aim to start the dance about 15 minutes after the time you have invited your guests, eg. 4pm party means 4.15 – 5.15pm for the dance. Most people invite guests for 2 hours, but you could choose to run the party for 15 - 30 minutes less.

The guests will arrive at different times, so it can help to have an activity that they do as they arrive – simple craft activities are ideal for this and help break the ice for shy children. You may find you don't need anything extra, but it can be helpful just in case.

For example, for our Fantasy Island theme, they could each decorate a pre-cut out paper fish or mermaid as they arrive and you could stick them on to a large piece of coloured paper decorated with seaweed / shells etc. Or you could stick them on to lolly sticks and they could use them in the dance later and take them home.

Our experience is that most girls concentrate well on craft activities, while most boys will do it really quickly and then want to run around! We aim to start the dance session within 15 minutes of your party time, so that their energy can be channelled quickly, but latecomers are also included right from the start. Anyone who hasn't finished their craft activity could come back to it later. (Make sure you write names on the back in pencil!)

Alternatively you could play a game which only involves one child at a time, such as Pin the Horn on the Unicorn (for Once Upon a Time), or Pin the Earth in the Solar System (for The Final Frontier). Treasure hunts are fun too – looking for relevant pictures around the venue.

With children aged 4 and up, memory games are a good calming activity – place a number of objects related to your theme on a tray covered with a cloth, give them a minute or two to look at them and remember them in groups. Have an adult or older child with pencil and paper with each group, so that younger children don't have to write and give a prize to the group who has remembered the most. The element of competition helps engage even very excitable children. You may not need to do anything extra, but it is best to plan, just in case!

Depending on the age of the children, the time of day (after school can be tiring) and the weather, the children may need a short break during the dance session. Your party leader will be able to judge this, but please have a supply of water nearby, so that thirsty children don't cause too much disruption. Having an adult handy to escort children to the toilet if necessary is helpful too.

After the dance session, you may need to rearrange the venue for food, as we need maximum space for dancing and tables can't be in the way. Discuss this with your party leader beforehand and he or she can make sure the dance session finishes with the group contained in one area of the hall, so that you can set up for the party tea. Children take about 20 – 30 minutes to eat at a party (including the birthday cake), so if you have a 2 hour party, you need to finish either with a game, a craft activity, fancy dress contest or simply put the music on and let the children dance – see if they can remember the dance they have learned! A themed piñata is also a fun climax to a party.

Please discuss your ideas with us, before the party and also with your party leader on the actual day, so that we can ensure your party is just what you want.
