If they can run they can dance!
Does your toddler love moving to music? Totsdance gives under 4s the chance to be creative and experience the world around them through dance, music and stories.
Dance with your child
At Totsdance you and your toddler explore movement, rhythm and texture together through lively dance exercises, games and sensory props. As a parent or carer, you are encouraged to join in too – your child will enjoy it and gain confidence.
Structure
Totsdance covers different themes week by week, anything from Building Site to Rainy Day. Everyday movements and objects are used creatively for dance, with a range of activities designed to accommodate young children’s short attention spans! Each class includes ‘follow-me’ dance warm-ups, exercises to explore the movement possibilities of a particular object, stories and songs. Toddlers will enjoy revisiting some of these activities in future sessions and the class follows a similar structure each week, to encourage familiarity and confidence.
Music
Music is an essential element of Totsdance and opens the children’s ears to a wide range of different sounds, from Haydn to Hi-5! Rather than simply singing along to a nursery rhyme tape, Totsdance gives them an experience of musical styles and instruments old and new, from around the world. Some of the music is specially composed by Kidsdance composer Rob Millett. We do sing nursery rhymes from time to time, but we are just as likely to dance to a chart song, an Irish jig or a bit of Philip Glass - in fact, anything that makes us want to get up and boogie!
Social
The social side of a toddler class is important – at least for the parents and carers! After the class we provide you with a cup of coffee - and space for your children to play. You’ll get the chance to meet other parents or carers at the same stage as you.
Experience
Totsdance is led by Sarah Dekker, a regular Saturday morning Kidsdance tutor. Sarah trained in Dance and Drama at Dartington College of Arts, The Laban Centre and Central School of Speech and Drama. She has been teaching dance and drama to people of all ages for more than 15 years and has run the education departments of contemporary dance companies Union Dance and Rambert Dance Company. Since having children (in 2000 and 2002), she has worked as a freelance dance education consultant for organisations including George Piper Dances (TV’s Ballet Boyz) and Sadler’s Wells. As a primary dance specialist she has taught dance in most of the infant and primary schools in the borough of Hounslow. Totsdance is exactly what she wishes she could have taken her own toddlers to!
